I love seeing how our members set up their ‘Diana Brook Yoga’ studio spaces at home! How are you making your yoga space special?

We love Sheli’s calming and peaceful set up, complete with some (very necessary) winter warmth from the fire for a cosy Shavasana…

When did you start your practice with us?

I started my practice with you just before Christmas after practicing on and off since early 2019. I came across the studio by chance on Instagram as I was looking for a yoga course to help me learn more about the principles and background that wasn't a full teacher course and I came across your Delve Deeper course. I was also trying to find a studio that suited me in terms of teaching style and range of classes, and I signed up for both!

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting yoga for the first time?

I'd definitely say that anyone can do it and not get worried about what you look like or that you don't look like the teacher or other students. I think a big misnomer is that you have to be flexible and tie yourself into knots but it's something that you can adapt to your body and abilities as well as how you feel on the day!

How do you make your at home yoga space feel more special?

I like to practice in my living room as I've spent a long time getting it to be how I like it and as I currently live on my own it's lovely and peaceful. I like to light candles and use aromatherapy oils or incense. I've also recently invested in a Himalayan salt lamp which I love.

What’s your favourite class and do you have a favourite yoga pose?

My favourite class is yin as I find that it calms me and I feel a lot of benefit from holding poses. My favourite pose is pigeon. I do enjoy the faster-paced classes too and love a sun salutation!

How would you describe the benefits of yoga to a friend?

I recommend yoga to everyone and bore them about it whenever I get a chance! For me, the benefits are both physical as well as mental and spiritual. I feel healthier and since practicing more regularly (I normally practice around 5 days a week but did an hour a day in January) I've definitely seen a reduction in the symptoms I experience from IBS and my pernicious anaemia. I also find that it gives me a focus which is so important for me at the moment and I'm hoping that I will make lifelong friends as part of Diana's yoga family!
